Non Technical Summary. FAMU's mission is to provide its constituents with current and timely theoretical and practical knowledge. Developing a strong biotech curriculum and providing access of the minority students to the highly competitive Bio. Summer Research Training Program. In addition to the summer research. Empower is designed to achieve a complete 360 degree development of the students of biotechnology. Registrations open for the biotech industrial training program. Tech job market is recognized as one of the University priorities (FAMU- BIO SUMMIT, 2. Miami, FL). Our proposal targets the enhancement of the biotechnology program at Florida A & M University by: 1/ establishing a much needed biotechnology laboratory facility for the existing AGG 2. L Intro Biotechnology Lab Course; and 2/ by developing integrated interdisciplinary model of engaging the biotech industry partner . If successful our project will contribute to the 1. Capacity Building Program goals to advance cultural diversity of the food and agricultural work force by attracting and educating more minority students in agricultural biotechnology and will strengthen linkages among Florida A & M University, USDA/ARS and the Biotechnology Industry. Furthermore, it will expand the student training experience and improve the educational and research training capacity of the FAMU's College of Engineering Sciences, Technology and Agriculture in the area of Biotechnology, Genomics and Plants Sciences. Over the past several years FAMU has been ranked No. The Division of Research has a latent pool of research scientists in Agricultural and Medicinal Biotechnology. The proposed project will take advantage of these scientists to accomplish the commitment to excellence in education and student experiential learning that has been the trademark of FAMU for the past twenty years. Our proposal targets the enhancement of the biotechnology program at the college of Engineering Sciences, Technology and Agriculture. The primary objective of this capacity building effort in biotechnology is to enrich and strengthen the instructional program at FAMU, CESTA in the fast growing area of biotechnology to supply trained scholars and as well as to expand knowledge, to attract and retain a diverse pool of minority students including women with competitive skills and establish better laboratory facilities. Achieving this objective will revolve around following specific objectives: 1/ To recruit and train minority students in Biotechnology by offering fellowships and work- study opportunities. To institute Summer Biotech Academy (a week of experiential learning experience) for attracting perspective secondary education graduates from local high schools and University's undecided general education students with learning goals as follows: & #6. Learn about the dynamic and multi- faceted biotechnology career opportunities & #6. Build a lasting relationship with a career mentor & #6. Discover new areas in which to apply an advanced science degree & #6. Network and make valuable business connections & #6. Narrow down career focus and establish goals & #6. Develop job search skills and refine interpersonal skills 3/ To establish permanent lab training facility for the existing AGG 2. L Biotechnology Lab Course, AGG 2. Intro Biotechnology and AGG 4. Global Seminar in Biotechnology and International Regulation Courses by acquisition of specialized equipment and multimedia aids and by upgrading the designated bench area of the PD's research lab. In the course of this project we propose to strengthen CESTA, FAMU research and educational capacity in biotechnology by upgrading laboratory facility, providing materials and supplies and financial assistantship to our students. Furthermore, they are so removed from the agricultural industry that they do not understand agriculture's role in the society. In the fall 2. 01. Mentors Council will be created with the involvement of faculty with biotechnology expertise from teaching, research and extension programs of the College, USDA/ARS Center for Biological Control and biotech industry representative. The charge of the council is capitalizing on the already established relations to work with local areas high schools (FAMU- DRS, Rickards High School, and Mariana High School) and undecided 1st and 2nd year general education students to attract participants for the Summer Biotech Academy, to administer the selection process, to award fellowships and to approve and implement the instructional modules of the Program. In the summer of 2. Academy will be offered to 2. Each of the trainees will be awarded a $ 5. Students will be surveyed at the beginning and at the end of the training program to measure changes in perceptions. During the fall of 2. Further research will be conducted to find and improve the instructional strategies for the second and third edition of the academy. Teaching Methods Employed: Learning activities will be presented in multimedia fashion including conventional lecture style, laboratory demonstrations, and small group discussions, interactive tutorials using electronic based platforms (Blackboard and IT videoconference), presentations and computer simulations.
